BACK TO BASICS: WHAT IS THE BARRIER OF THE SKIN?

Your skin is made up of layers, each of which performs important functions in protecting your body, the barrier is the outermost layer or the “protective layer.” Essentially, the protective layer helps your body function properly….it helps keep water in and pollution/toxins out.

The skin barrier can be damaged by factors such as too humid or too dry environment, too much sun exposure, over exfoliating, even some detergents and stress can damage it. These factors can leave your skin feeling dry, sensitive, itchy or causing a tingly/burning sensation when you apply products.

Sometimes we just need to go back to the basics…slow down with trying all different products that work for other people on social media and just get that skin barrier back in tact. How you ask? Great question!

  1. Wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every morning no matter what

  2. Avoid harsh exfoliates such as loofahs and intense facial scrubs

  3. Avoid being in harsh weather conditions for long periods of time

  4. Drink plenty of water

  5. Use gentle cleanser and moisturizer

Our custom barrier facial is a great way to start any skin journey. We will do a thorough consultation that will determine if your skin barrier is intact and if not how to fix it. We will also put together some recommendations for what products would be good specifically for your skin. It’s never too late to take care of your skin!
